Do you suffer from Imposter Syndrome?  it’s highly likely that if you’re reading this blog you are interested in personal development and growth. And believe it, or believe it not, this also makes you more likely to have experienced imposter syndrome.
Imposter Syndrome is described as “A feeling of unworthiness, despite evidence of success” and statistics show that it is more prevalent in high achievers.  I like to describe it as your competence being higher than your confidence.
Imposter Syndrome can actually be seen as a positive indicator of growth. The harsh reality is that someone who is underperforming and comfortably stagnant is unlikely to feel like an imposter. That being said, no one likes to experience that feeling of unworthiness so let’s take a look at how best to manage it.
I like to use the 3 C’s Technique that can be seen in the short one minute video below

Let’s take a more in-depth look at the 3 C’s of Clarify, Choose and Create
  1. Clarify – Clarify what triggers you to experience Imposter Syndrome A trigger is an external stimulus that triggers an Internal response.  It’s something we see, hear, touch, taste or smell that makes us feel a certain way usually associated with a memory or experience of the past. Triggers can be very positive too. For example an affirmation, goal card, quote, friendly face or a certain scent and make us feel excited, content or nostalgic. What triggers you to experience Imposter Syndrome?

  1.  Choose – It is highly likely that you have accomplished an incredible amount in life, perhaps being a great parent, an innovative business owner or a positive role model in your community. One exercise I get high achieving clients to perform is to write a list of 40 relevant accomplishments. For example, if you feel like an imposter attending a networking event, write out the times where you have connected with likeminded people, held and took part in engaging conversations. The obvious and conscious answers come first but then the unconscious memories start to appear which reminds us previous successes changing our emotional state from one of unworthiness to that of inspired,

  1. Create – The most important aspect which is to create a new story. The reality is the only person telling you that your not good enough, smart enough, strong enough, qualified enough….is you! Working off the power of opposites, if self-doubt exists, so must self-belief and what self-belief loves is evidence. The best way to create a new story is to actually experience it through the action you’re avoiding. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
